Navjeevan Law College – Legal Aid Clinic

Article 39-A of Indian Constitution makes it mandatory for the states to ensure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice by providing Free Legal Aid and that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities. Thus the state is under obligation to provide or create an effective mechanism for making justice accessible to the poor, downtrodden, and disadvantaged groups, to secure the goal enshrined in Preamble of Indian Constitution.

National Legal services Authority in its meeting at Supreme Court of India dated 8/12/2010 adopted the National Legal Services Authority (Legal Aid Clinics) Scheme, 2010 for establishing Legal Aid Clinics throughout the country. The scheme authorises the State Legal Services Authority to grant permissions for establishing the Legal Aid Clinics in their respective states.

Legal Aid Clinics basically serve the purpose of providing legal advice not for the aim of earning profit but in general public interest. Legal Aid Clinics serve the two fold purpose, the first that they provide free legal services to economically weaker people and second, they direct the energies of the students of law in contributing to the society. The members of the Legal Aid Clinic are engaged in spreading legal awareness in rural areas through street plays as well as legal aid camps, where they make the target population aware of different legal service programs and guide them to avail these facilities.

Illiterate, Women and Children, Laborers, Victims of Human Trafficking and Persons with disability are most vulnerable to atrocities and hence they need legal advice. The teacher or student, if required may bring the matter before the Legal Service Authority, if needed.

Legal Aid Clinics are manned by Para-Legal Volunteers with a sense of commitment, sensibility, and sensitiveness to the problems of common people.

Navjeevan Law College, Legal Aid Clinic is recognised by Maharashtra Legal Services Authority and established in the year 2017.  The Legal Aid Clinic is having a separate specious office, counselling room, seating chamber for lawyer and para legal volunteers. The office is equipped with computer having internet facility. The working of Legal Aid clinic is running very successfully under the active participation and supervision of Mr. J.C. Shirsale, Rtd.
